Lionel Scaloni has admitted that defending the FIFA World Cup title will be a huge challenge for Argentina, stressing that success at the tournament depends on much more than just playing good football.
The Argentina head coach, who guided the country to World Cup glory in Qatar in 2022, said many factors must come together for a team to lift football’s biggest trophy.
Speaking ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Scaloni explained that preparation, mentality, and attention to detail are all important parts of success.
“To win the World Cup, a lot of things have to come together. It’s not just about playing well,” Scaloni said.
“It’s very difficult, but of course we’ll try, just like Argentina always does every time we compete. We’ll try to go as far as possible. It’s difficult, but not impossible.”
Scaloni also revealed how seriously his coaching staff approaches preparations for major tournaments. According to him, every small detail is carefully studied to ensure the team is fully prepared.
However, he believes giving players too much information can sometimes create confusion.

“With the coaching staff, we prepare every small detail and leave nothing to chance,” he added. “But we don’t tell the players every single thing, because too much information can confuse them.”
Argentina national football team heads into the 2026 World Cup as defending champions after their historic triumph in Qatar, where they defeated France in a dramatic final led by captain Lionel Messi.
Since then, the team has remained one of the strongest sides in international football under Scaloni’s leadership.
The South American giants are again among the favourites for the tournament, with experienced stars and several young talents expected to feature in the squad.
Reports suggest Scaloni has already started monitoring players closely as Argentina prepares for the competition in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
