The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has announced plans to introduce a cashless payment system for spot fines to improve transparency and accountability in its enforcement activities.
The move comes months after the Authority suspended the issuance of spot fines by its compliance team in October 2025.
The suspension followed public concerns about inadequate education on the exercise, as well as complaints from motorists over how cash payments were handled.
Under the new system, drivers who are fined for traffic offences will pay electronically through an online platform.
This will ensure that all payments go directly to the DVLA, eliminating the need for cash transactions and reducing uncertainty about how funds are received and recorded.
Speaking in an interview on Friday, February 13, the Director of Corporate Affairs at the DVLA, Stephen Attuh, stated: “So we’re putting in place a platform that allows for payment online so that if you are caught on the road having committed an infraction, if they charge you, you pay, and you see that you are paying directly to DVLA. And we are sure that that will leave us with some level of transparency”.
