Saudi Arabia sacks Hervé Renard ahead of World Cup

The Saudi Arabian Football Federation has reportedly dismissed national team head coach Hervé Renard, in a shock decision coming just two months before the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Renard’s departure marks a dramatic turn for Saudi Arabian football, given his significant impact during his tenure.

The Frenchman, who took charge of the Saudi Arabia national football team in 2019, quickly established himself as one of the most influential managers in the country’s recent football history.

Under his leadership, Saudi Arabia enjoyed a strong run of form, particularly during the qualification campaign for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

The team topped their qualifying group ahead of regional heavyweights, showcasing defensive discipline and tactical organization that became hallmarks of Renard’s approach.

One of the defining moments of his tenure came at the World Cup in Qatar, where Saudi Arabia stunned eventual champions Argentina national football team with a famous 2-1 victory in the group stage, widely regarded as one of the greatest upsets in World Cup history.

That result cemented Renard’s reputation as a manager capable of inspiring underdog teams on the biggest stage.

Across his time in charge, Renard oversaw more than 40 matches, recording a respectable win rate of around 50 percent, alongside several draws and competitive performances against higher-ranked opponents.

His tenure was also marked by a focus on blending experienced internationals with emerging local talents from the Saudi Pro League.

However, recent performances and internal dynamics are believed to have influenced the federation’s decision. With the 2026 World Cup fast approaching, the timing of the dismissal raises serious questions about preparation and stability within the national team setup.

Renard, a two-time Africa Cup of Nations winner with Zambia and Ivory Coast, leaves behind a legacy of discipline, tactical awareness, and historic achievements with Saudi Arabia.
