Dr. Omane Boamah, Murtala Muhammed, 6 others die in helicopter crash

Ghana’s Defence Minister Dr. Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, the Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, and six others have been confirmed dead after a Ghana Air Force helicopter Z9 crashed and burst into flames shortly after taking off from Accra on the morning of Wednesday, August 6, 2025.

The others confirmed dead include Alhaji Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator; Dr Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC); Mr Samuel Aboagye, former Parliamentary candidate; Squadron Leader Peter Anala; Flying Officer Twum Ampadu; and Sergeant Ernest Addo.

This news was shared by the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, during a press briefing shortly after the incident.

Confirming the unfortunate incident, Mr. Debrah emphasised that the helicopter involved in the crash was carrying eight people, three crew members and five passengers, including ministers, a member of the presidential staff and the security detail for the ministers.

This comes after the Ghana Armed Forces, in a brief statement, confirmed that they were working to locate and examine the wreckage of the helicopter, which lost contact shortly after taking off on Wednesday morning.

The exact cause of the crash is still under investigation, and no additional details have been released by the authorities.

It would be recalled that on March 19, 2024, a similar incident occurred when a military aircraft crash-landed near Bonsukrom in the Western Region.

Fortunately, there were no fatalities in that earlier incident.
