Energy Ministry dismisses reports of aviation fuel shortage

The Ministry of Energy and Green Transition has firmly denied reports of an ongoing shortage of Aviation Turbine Kerosene (ATK) in Ghana, assuring both the public and airline operators that there is sufficient fuel to support all aircraft operations.

In a statement released on Thursday, July 24, 2025, the Ministry described the reports as inaccurate and misleading, urging the public to disregard any claims suggesting a fuel crisis.

“We wish to clarify that there is no shortage of aviation fuel in the country. Current stock levels are adequate to meet the demands of all scheduled and unscheduled flights,” the Ministry stated.

The Ministry emphasised that it is closely monitoring supply levels in collaboration with key industry stakeholders to ensure uninterrupted service and maintain confidence in Ghana’s aviation sector.

“Recent maintenance work was completed on the ATK jetty pipeline to enhance fuel security. This was long overdue, and any delays would have posed risks to the integrity of the jetty and the country’s fuel security,” the statement said.

The Ministry disclosed that Ghana recently received an ATK vessel carrying 11,984 metric tons (MT) of fuel.

Of this amount, 4,583 MT have already been successfully discharged to PWSL within the last two days.

The remaining stock is being discharged to the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) and Ridge Depots via the TOR Jetty, with completion expected by midday on Friday, July 25, 2025.

The statement indicated that Deputy Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Richard Gyan-Mensah, has held strategic discussions with key players in the downstream petroleum sector and the management of the Ghana Airport Company Limited to reinforce measures that ensure a consistent and reliable supply of aviation fuel.

It urged the public to disregard any reports suggesting otherwise, emphasising that the fuel supply chain remains stable and fully operational.
