Incumbent Member of Parliament (MP) for Agona West, Cynthia Mamle Morrison, has announced her intention to contest the 2024 parliamentary elections as an independent candidate.

This decision comes after she lost the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary primary to Christopher Arthur.

She declared her candidacy to her constituents, stating, “God willing, I would be contesting the parliamentary election as an independent candidate… It is not about the NDC, and it is not about the NPP. It is about the development of Agona.”

She emphasised her commitment to the constituency’s development, saying, “I don’t care whether you vote for former President John Dramani Mahama or Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. But the most important thing is for you to vote massively for Cynthia Morrison so I can come and complete the work I started.”

Morrison has a strong track record in the constituency, winning the seat in the 2016 parliamentary election with 32,770 votes (58.03% of total valid votes) as against Paul Ofori-Amoah of the opposition National Democratic Congress, who had 27,673 votes, and independent candidate Ishmael Kofi Tekyi Turkson, who had 1,007 votes.

She also retained the seat in the 2020 general election with 30,513 votes.
