2024 election was free and fair—Commonwealth Observer Mission
The Commonwealth Observer Mission has commended Ghana’s Electoral Commission (EC) and the entire citizenry for embarking on a free, fair, and transparent election.
Mokgweetsi Masisi, leader of the Commonwealth Observer Mission, also lauded the Ghana Police Service for exhibiting professionalism during and after the general elections on December 7, 2024, despite instances of violence that led to at least four deaths.
He made this comment during a debriefing with the National Election Security Taskforce.
“It’s significant to applaud the conduct of the 2024 elections in Ghana because, in terms of the criteria established, they qualified as free, fair, transparent, and decisive.
“The police in Ghana played an extremely important role of being the referee of law and order, the keeper of peace, without the use of force.”
This signifies a major political event as Mr. Mahama returns to the presidency after eight years in opposition.
Mr. Mahama won by securing 6,328,397 votes, representing 56.55 per cent, while Dr. Bawumia polled 4,657,304, representing 41.61 per cent.
The EC called the election within 48 hours after the polls closed on Saturday, December 7, 2024.
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia conceded defeat in the 2024 presidential race a few hours after provisional results projected Mr. Mahama as the winner on Saturday.
