A 16-month-old baby has reportedly drowned in a well at Ahwerewam-Domeabra near Mankranso in the Ashanti Region.
The baby is believed to have crawled to the well, which is inside her parents’ house, and slipped when the mother was away to buy food.
The unfortunate incident is said to have occurred around 7:00 pm on 29 May 2022, but the baby was found two days after the tragic event.
A police report said the mother of the girl, Rita Atuah, 28, accompanied by her husband, Akwasi Agyemang, 33, reported the incident to the Pokukrom Police Station officers.
Daily Guide Network (DGN) reported that the mother had left the sleeping child in the room to go and buy food. On her return, she realised the little girl, now deceased, was nowhere to be found.
A search party was immediately organised, and the body was retrieved in a well near the house.
The body was removed and deposited at the Plus Lab Mortuary, awaiting autopsy and investigations.
This is not the first time a baby has drowned in a well.
A similar incident happened on 21 April 2020. A two-year-old boy got drowned in a well while playing with his siblings at Top Town, Ngleshie Amanfro, in the Ga South Municipality of the Greater Accra Region.
The incident occurred when the boy accidentally stepped on a roofing sheet used to cover the well.
An uncle of the boy, who gave his name only as Red, told the Daily Graphic that the unfortunate incident happened at about 3:00 pm on the said date.
He confirmed that the boy had been buried after the incident was reported to the police.
