Withdraw 50% increment on Communication Service Tax -Sam George charges
The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) is demanding an immediate withdrawal of the 50 per cent increment in the Communication Service Tax.
This, including the trade-off of non-expiry of data and tariff increases which according to them has disadvantaged the populace even the more.
Speaking at the 7th edition of the Moment of Truth series at the party National Headquarters on Thursday, Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, Samuel Nartey George accused the Akufo-Addo government of causing immense hardship to Ghanaians within this short three year period.
The Ningo-Prampram MP argues the increased CST by 50 per cent was preoccupied with deception and not decreasing the tax hikes to bring economic relief to Ghanaians.
“The Government’s position was not to listen to the cries of the people for the removal of the increase but rather a directive to hide the deductions. What this has done is, instead of a flat 7 per cent deduction when you purchase either a voice or data plan, the Minister has approved a tariff increase for the Telcos which is charged on a rolling basis every time you make a call, he lamented bitterly to the crop of journalists gathered.
“This actually brings more revenue to the Telcos and also means more corporate tax for the government. The only one losing out here is the ordinary Ghanaian. The Telcos are interested solely in their bottom lines and profit margins for their shareholders and, sadly, the Akufo-Addo Government which Ghanaians elected is interested in how much more tax it can take out of our meagre earnings, ” he added.
The NDC is, therefore, demanding immediate withdrawal of the recent tax increments.
