Water Shortage Looms In Tamale As NEDCo Disconnects GWCL Over GH¢39m Debt
Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) has disconnected the power supply to Ghana Water Company’s Northern Regional Treatment Plant at Dalun in the Kumbungu District, in the Northern Region over non-payment of bills.
According to NEDCo, the water company owes over GH¢39 million in electricity bills.
The Dalun Water Treatment Plant supplies water to residents in Tamale and its environs.
The disconnection if not restored immediately will affect residents as they will struggle for clean and safe water for their households.
The Area Manager for NEDCo, Elvis Denuyakor has noted that the action to disconnect the power supply to the water company is necessary to enable the company to retrieve the over GH¢1.2 billion debts owed by its customers to enable it to stay in operation.
This means that residents in Tamale could face a much tighter water rationing schedule.
In April this year, NEDCo began a mass revenue mobilization exercise to retrieve some GH¢1.2 billion owed by companies.
During the exercise, Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium in Tamale, St Annes Hospital in Damongo, and the Wa Government Hospital were all affected.
The management of GWCL in the Region has assured residents of stable water flow in the coming days as the head office in Accra is dealing with the situation at hand.
