Upper West records 15 suspected meningitis cases, 2 deaths

The Upper West Region has documented 15 suspected cases of meningitis, with laboratory tests confirming four of these cases, and two fatalities have been reported thus far in the ongoing meningitis season.

During a media briefing on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, Dr. Josephat Nyuzaghl, the Upper West Regional Director of Health Services, remarked that while the season is still in progress, the current situation is relatively stable compared to the previous year, which saw 269 suspected cases.

Out of those cases, 36 were confirmed, leading to 18 fatalities, which resulted in a case fatality rate of approximately 6.7%, below the World Health Organisation’s recommended maximum of 10%.

He noted that the majority of last year’s cases were attributed to Streptococcus pneumoniae, predominantly affecting young individuals aged between 11 and 20, with the Nadowli and Nandom districts experiencing the most severe impact of the outbreak.

“The 2025–2026 meningitis season started around the last week of October and is expected to run until April. Compared to last year, we are seeing fewer cases and fewer fatalities, which shows that our preparedness measures are making a difference,” Dr. Nyuzaghl stated.

He elaborated that the health directorate is enhancing surveillance, improving access to treatment, and bolstering risk communication to avert further cases and reduce mortality.
