The Concerned Students’ Movement of the University of Ghana has announced plans to protest on Monday, November 2, 2026, against a 26% increase in accommodation fees at university halls and facilities managed by the University of Ghana Enterprise Limited (UGEL).
The group is calling for a reduction in the new fees, refunds for students who have already paid and more openness in decisions about accommodation charges.
In an interview, a member of the movement, Ishmael Oduro-Acheampong, said the group was in talks with the Dean of Students’ Affairs and other university authorities to resolve the concerns before the planned protest.
He described the new accommodation fees as too high, saying some charges had increased sharply within just two semesters.
“Just two semesters ago, the facility where students were paying about GH₵3,000 and GH₵4,000 now is being priced around GH₵8,000,” he said.
Mr Oduro-Acheampong also questioned how the increases were decided. He said students should be consulted and given clear reasons before any new fees are introduced.
He added that accommodation fees should match the quality of services provided. He warned against charging students high prices for facilities that do not provide services that are worth the amount being paid.
The movement is also calling for greater accountability from the University of Ghana Students’ Representative Council (SRC), especially in how it handles issues affecting students.
Mr Oduro-Acheampong said the group expected university authorities to explain the reasons for the increases and show how the new fees matched the services available to students living in the facilities.
