UG says facility user fees unchanged despite GTEC directive

By

The University of Ghana has defended its approved fees for the 2025/2026 academic year, maintaining that it has not increased Academic Facility User Fees and remains fully committed to complying with national regulations.

The clarification follows a directive from the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission urging the University to strictly adhere to fees approved by the Ministry of Education, warning that sanctions could apply if the directive is ignored.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, GTEC reaffirmed that the approved fees remain valid despite concerns raised by the University’s management.

Responding a day later, the Office of the Registrar said the University operates within the framework of the Fees Act, 2022 and under the regulatory oversight of GTEC.

Management explained that all statutory fees implemented by the University receive parliamentary approval and are subject to governance checks by the University Council.

UG stressed that the Academic Facility User Fees for the upcoming academic year remain unchanged since the 2023/2024 academic year.

According to the University, adjustments noticed in other parts of the fee structure were based on proposals that emerged from student engagement through the Students’ Representative Council and the Graduate Students Association of Ghana.

“Academic Facility User Fees for the 2025/2026 academic year have not been increased and remain the same as the previous two academic years,” the statement said.

The University disclosed that meetings involving its officials, student leaders, GTEC and the Deputy Minister for Education were held on January 8, 2026, where consensus was reached on several fee-related matters, including setting the SRC Development Levy at GH¢200.

UG also clarified that the Telecel data bundle is optional and that the 75th Anniversary Levy supports an ongoing student facility project.

Management added that measures such as flexible registration payments and scholarships remain in place to support students, while engagements with regulators will continue.
