A University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) student, William Thompson Jnr, was nearly lynched after he was mistaken for a thief by his colleagues.

The third-year student sustained severe injuries when he was attacked during their Student Representative Council(SRC) celebrations.

According to reports, the victim was walking towards a hostel with two other friends when the incident occurred at about 10 pm on Thursday, July 27.

While on the stroll, one of the friends excused himself to use the washroom in one of the hostels.

After waiting for a while, William and the other friend began to worry about their colleague’s long stay in the washroom and went to search for him.

William approached one of the residents at the hostel to inquire about his friend and was directed to a particular room on the floor.

But when he entered the room, the resident and his roommates accused him of being the suspect who had been stealing mobile phones and laptops from them.

They subjected him to severe beatings leading to the injuries.

His friends, however, heard him shouting for help in the room and rushed to rescue him.

They rushed William to the university hospital, but he was transferred to the regional hospital in Sunyani due to the severity of his injuries.

A video circulating online shows William with a swollen face, cuts on his back, and difficulty walking in the hospital.

They also reported the incident to the UENR school authorities, who acted immediately.

One of the culprits has been arrested, while two others are on the run.
