Two killed in police–protester clash over galamsey site at Abosso

Two demonstrators were reportedly shot dead by police on Wednesday, December 31, 2025, at Abosso near Tarkwa, during a confrontation linked to protests over the alleged handover of an illegal mining (galamsey) site to Chinese operators.

The Western Central Regional Police Command in Tarkwa indicated that the incident has not yet been officially confirmed.

However, the Deputy Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) for the Prestea-Huni-Valley Municipality, Louis Afful, confirmed to the media that he witnessed the shooting.

According to him, the victims were later taken to the morgue at the Tarkwa Government Hospital.

He explained that tensions escalated after a police patrol team arrived in the community and fired warning shots in an attempt to disperse residents.

“This morning, a police patrol squad came to the town and fired warning shots. As I speak, two people have lost their lives, and community members have also blocked the road,” he said.

The situation remains tense as authorities work to establish the full facts surrounding the incident.
