The National Communications Authority (NCA) has announced a new security measure for the upcoming SIM re-registration exercise, introducing one-time password verification to confirm user consent and reduce fraud.
The new system forms part of a broader nationwide SIM registration exercise being rolled out by the Ministry of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation in collaboration with the NCA.
The move is aimed at tackling fraud, identity theft, and the misuse of personal information linked to SIM cards.
Under the new arrangement, individuals will be required to approve the registration of any additional SIM cards linked to their identification details through a one-time password sent directly to their phone.
Authorities believe this will prevent people from using other individuals’ identification documents to register SIM cards without their knowledge.
The initiative is also expected to improve transparency and accountability in the registration process, as every SIM card registered with a Ghana Card or other identification will require direct approval from the owner of the document.
Officials say the new measure will help reduce criminal activities carried out using SIM cards registered in the names of unsuspecting individuals, which has been a major concern in previous registration exercises.
Speaking on Sunday, March 22, 2026, the Director General of the National Communications Authority, Edmund Yirenkyi Fianko, warned the public against allowing others to use their identification documents for SIM registration, saying, “You should not use your card to register numbers for others because you must give your consent”.
The NCA has advised the public to remain vigilant and protect their personal data as preparations continue for the nationwide exercise.
