Trotro driver fatally knocks down policeman to escape arrest

 A minibus driver escaping arrest on Friday ran over a police officer at Trinity Avenue near Mempeasem at East Legon in Accra.

The incident reportedly happened around 10 a.m, Graphic Online reported.

According to eyewitnesses account, the two policemen said to be from the Madina Motor Transport and Traffic Department (MTTD) were trying to arrest the driver chased him with a police vehicle and stopped him on the Trinity Avenue, near the entrance of the Trinity Theological Seminary.

The policemen got out of their vehicle and one of them went in front of the vehicle while the other went behind it.

While the policemen tried to open the doors of the vehicle,  the trotro driver allegedly reversed the vehicle and ran over the policeman who was behind the car and dragged him on the road for some metres.
After the incident, the driver and his conductor bolted leaving behind the minibus, which had no passengers.

The eyewitnesses said some car dealers around the area, who witnessed the incident, chased the trotro driver until he parked the vehicle near a bush and took to his heels together with his conductor (mate).

The injured policeman has since been taken to the hospital for medical care, according to the eyewitness.

The injured police officer, Sergeant Moses Appiah, has  been pronounced dead  at the 37 Military Hospital where he was sent for treatment.
