The remodelling of Terminal 2 at Kotoka International Airport, which will soon be known as Accra International Airport, is expected to be completed by July 2026, according to the Ministry of Transport (Ghana).
The 18 million dollar project is intended to transform Terminal 2 into a facility capable of handling both domestic and international flights.
Authorities say the change will help reduce passenger congestion currently experienced at Terminal 3 as air travel continues to grow.
During an inspection tour of the ongoing works on Wednesday, March 11, the Transport Minister, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, visited the site with airline operators to assess the progress of construction and the readiness of the facility.
According to the minister, the remodelling forms part of government efforts to improve efficiency within the aviation sector while preparing the airport to accommodate rising passenger numbers.
“We are here today to inspect the works the contractors are doing to remodel Terminal 2, enabling it to serve both Ghanaians and international passengers. We have toured the facility with the airlines and have seen the progress. It is our hope that by July the contractors will complete the project on schedule so Terminal 2 can fully play its dual role as both a domestic and international terminal,” he said.
The project will also bring visible changes to the airport’s identity. Authorities plan to replace the current inscription of Kotoka International Airport with “Accra International Airport” once the works are completed.
Mr Nikpe also cautioned that operators at the Private Jet Terminal who fail to renew their permits risk losing their licences as the government tightens regulations within the aviation space.
