Western edge Upper West as Ashanti beat Eastern on penalties in U-19 Championship

Western Region secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Upper West Region in the opening Group A match of Matchday 5 of the MTN Elite U-19 Championship on Monday, August 31, 2026.

The encounter, played at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence in Prampram, was a closely fought contest, with both teams struggling to create clear scoring opportunities.

With the match appearing destined to end without a goal, Western Region found the breakthrough in the 80th minute through Emmanuel Antwi.

Antwi’s late strike proved to be the difference as Western Region held on to claim all three points from the encounter. His decisive contribution also earned him the Most Valuable Player award for his performance.

In the other Group A match, Ashanti Region overcame Eastern Region in a dramatic penalty shootout after the two sides played out a goalless draw in regulation time.

Neither team managed to find the back of the net during the match despite their efforts, forcing the game to be decided from the penalty spot.

Ashanti Region eventually held their nerve to win the shootout 6-5 and secure an important victory.

Issah Seidu was named the Best Player of the Match for Ashanti Region after producing an impressive performance in the tightly contested encounter.
