Kylian Mbappé has made a strong case for himself in the race for the Ballon d’Or, insisting that he would vote for himself if given the chance to choose the winner.
The Real Madrid forward believes the award should focus mainly on a player’s individual performances rather than simply the number of trophies won during the season.
“Ballon d’Or? I would vote for myself,” Mbappé said, explaining that voters should look closely at what each player achieved individually.
The France international also responded to criticism that his lack of major trophies should count against his chances. According to Mbappé, no Ballon d’Or winner has ever met every single requirement used to determine the award.
He argued that the voting process itself shows that there is no unanimous agreement over who deserves the prize.
“Has any player ever won the Ballon d’Or unanimously? No,” he said, adding that there will always be someone who believes the eventual winner did not deserve the award.
Mbappé also highlighted his goalscoring achievements as part of his argument. He pointed to his record as the leading scorer in World Cup history and his performances in major competitions.
The forward further claimed that being among the top scorers across the biggest tournaments, including the UEFA Champions League and the World Cup, should be considered when assessing his Ballon d’Or credentials.
For Mbappé, such records represent achievements that should not be ignored when individual awards are being decided.
“I believe that making history should always be rewarded,” he said.
Despite his confidence, Mbappé acknowledged that other players have strong claims to the award and accepted that some voters may disagree with him.
