Diego Forlán opens up on Julián Álvarez transfer speculation

Former Atlético Madrid striker Diego Forlán has shared his thoughts on the growing speculation surrounding the future of Julián Álvarez, admitting that he would be disappointed to see the Argentine leave the Spanish club but acknowledging that players must be allowed to make career decisions that suit them.

Álvarez has been at the centre of transfer rumours in recent weeks, with reports linking him to several top European clubs, including Barcelona, Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain.

The 2022 FIFA World Cup winner has become one of Atlético Madrid’s most important players since joining the club and is widely regarded as one of the best young forwards in world football.

Speaking about the possibility of Álvarez leaving, Forlán said it would be a loss for Atlético Madrid because of the striker’s quality and importance to the team.

“That would be a shame because I like him a lot,” the former Uruguay international said.

However, Forlán stressed that a player’s desire to explore a new challenge should not be interpreted as a lack of affection for his current club.

“If the player sees the opportunity to move to another team in a positive light, that doesn’t mean he doesn’t love the club,” he explained.

The former Atlético star also highlighted the importance of keeping motivated players within a squad. According to him, if a footballer wishes to leave and is forced to stay, it could negatively affect performances on the pitch.

“If he stays and doesn’t want to, he won’t give his best,” Forlán said, adding that no individual is bigger than a club and that every player can eventually be replaced.

Forlán further suggested that Atlético Madrid should consider a transfer if a suitable offer arrives, but only if the club receives a fee that reflects Álvarez’s true value in the current market.

“If he gets a good offer and wants to leave, it should be for a high fee because he is a player who deserves it,” he stated.

Despite the speculation, Atlético Madrid has consistently maintained that Álvarez remains a key part of their long-term plans.

The striker is under contract until 2030, but his future is expected to remain a major topic of discussion throughout the transfer window.
