School feeding caterers receive outstanding arrears

Caterers under the Ghana School Feeding Programme have begun receiving overdue payments for the third term, according to Nana Amoh Otu Sekyi, National President of the School Feeding Caterers Association.

This development follows a commitment by the Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection, Dakoa Newman to clear the arrears.

Speaking in an interview, Nana Amoh Otu Sekyi confirmed that while some caterers have successfully accessed their funds, others are experiencing delays due to holidays and limited banking access in rural areas.

“Payments were initiated on December 31 around 6 p.m. Some caterers managed to access their funds on January 1 using e-zwich machines at certain banks. However, others, especially in rural areas, may need to wait until normal banking hours resume,” she explained.

She also expressed optimism that outstanding arrears dating back to 2019 would soon be resolved.

“I’ve been in contact with the chief accountant, and we’re scheduled to discuss the 2019 arrears on January 2. We hope for positive news,” she said.

Background

The payment comes after months of frustration and protests by caterers over unpaid arrears for two academic terms spanning 2023 and 2024.

On December 30, caterers demonstrated at the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection, demanding reimbursement for pre-financed meals.

Despite assurances from the Controller and Accountant General’s Department that funds were released, the caterers reported delays.

This progress marks a significant step forward, although many caterers await the full resolution of their longstanding financial challenges.
