17 busted in Tamale drug raid

The police have arrested seventeen persons in Tamale for possessing suspected Indian hemp and other illegal substances.

Additionally, three military personnel were apprehended with suspected Indian hemp and have been transferred to the Military Police Command for further proceedings.

These arrests were executed by the Inspector-General of Police Special Operations Team during patrols in the Water Works Area, Aboabo Market, and the vicinity of Kamina Barracks.

Among those detained were Alhassan Abdul Shakun, Hawa Yakubu, and Ikram Abdul Razak, who were discovered in possession of suspected Indian hemp and Koffex cough syrup.

The Northern Regional Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Bawah Abdul Jalil, stated that the operation has effectively disrupted the distribution of illegal narcotics in Tamale and has bolstered public trust in the Ghana Police Service.

He also revealed that the team conducted separate discussions with officials from the Tamale Technical University, including the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Bashiru Imoro Iden Saed, and campus security personnel, to address safety issues.

“We are committed to addressing the security challenges on campus and ensuring the area is safe for all so that people can go about their duties without fear,” DSP Jalil remarked.

The Vice-Chancellor requested enhanced security measures to protect students, staff, and property, referencing multiple theft incidents at the university and its teaching hospital.

“There is an urgent need for improved security measures to safeguard the campus community and university assets,” he emphasised.
