The Minister for Roads and Highways, Kwame Agbodza, has defended the government’s decision to modify the Suame Interchange project, saying it should be praised rather than criticised.
According to the Minister, the changes were made to reflect Kumasi’s evolving urban landscape and traffic conditions.
Responding to concerns raised by the NPP Ashanti Caucus, the Minister explained that the redesigned project focuses on improved efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and long-term benefits for road users and the city as a whole.
“The money for the fourth tier is being allocated to the continuation of the N10 from Abusuakuruwa to Akom, which makes it an even more desirable plan,” he stated, insisting that no funds have been diverted from the original project.
He further disclosed that over GH¢3 billion has been committed to the outer ring road alone.
The Minister also rejected claims of policy inconsistency under the Big Push Programme, saying the Suame Interchange remains a flagship project within the initiative.
“We are committed to ensuring that the people of Kumasi get value for money,” he said.
“Kumasi, as the second largest city, deserves the best,” the Minister added, expressing confidence that the modified interchange and complementary road projects would be fully appreciated upon completion.
