Railway workers protest again over unpaid salary arrears

Frustration is mounting among railway workers in Ghana as they return to the Ministry of Transport to demand payment of long-overdue salary arrears.

Just a week after being assured that their concerns would be addressed, the workers say there has been no update or progress.

Their return to picket reflects growing anger and a sense of neglect among employees who say they have waited too long for what is owed to them.

Speaking to the media, General Secretary of the Ghana Railway Workers Union, Benjamin Essuman, said authorities have failed to act despite available funds.

He pointed to GHS20.6 million raised from the sale of obsolete railway materials, which he believes could be used to settle part of the arrears.

The workers insist they are losing patience and may escalate their actions if nothing changes soon. “What we are saying is that by the 31st, we need our money.

He also pushed back against claims that workers are not contributing to the sector, arguing instead that railway staff remain committed despite the challenges.

According to him, ongoing operations such as train movements on the Tema to Mpakadan line show that workers are still doing their part.

Essuman attributed the sector’s struggles to political interference and a lack of clear policy direction rather than any failure on the part of workers.

Unlike their previous protest, the group says no official has come forward to address them this time.
