Quayson Suffers Another Blow As Court of Appeal Dismisses Application
Assin North MP James Gyakye Quayson has suffered another blow as the Court of Appeal has struck out his stay of proceedings application.
Mr Quayson, who has been in court since his swearing-in ceremony in Parliament, is on trial for perjury and forgery.
He sought refuge at the Court of Appeal, challenging the Accra High Court’s decision to hear the case on a day-to-day basis.
The embattled MP wanted the appeals court to stay proceedings until the determination of his appeal challenging the High Court’s decision.
But the court dismissed the application.
On Wednesday, July 19, the three-member panel said no exceptional circumstance had been made to grant the applicant’s [James Quayson] request.
The court was of the view that Mr Quayson could not prove how the daily hearing of the trial affected his right to a fair hearing as provided by the 1992 Constitution.
The three-member panel of the Court of Appeal unanimously gave the green light for the trial to proceed.
Mr Quayson is before the court on five charges — deceit of a public officer, forgery of a passport or travel certificate, knowingly making a false statement, perjury, and false declaration for office.
He has pleaded not guilty and is currently on bail.
