”Prosecute Illegal Miners, They Are Terrorists”-Sam George to Government
The member of parliament for Ningo Prampram, Hon. Sam George has called on the government to prosecute illegal miners.
The Member of Parliament in an interview stated that it was high time the government deployed the military to deal with illegal miners destroying forest reserves and polluting water bodies in the country.
Sam George expressed worry over the depletion of Ghana’s forests and the pollution of water bodies, pointing a finger at illegal mining (galamsey).
He said, for him to accept that government is committed to the fight against galamsey and for government to be able to win the fight against illegal mining, illegal miners must be classified terrorists and dealt with accordingly.
Mr. Sam George urged the government to prosecute the owner of the Akonta Mining Company, Chairman Wontumi to serve as a deterrent to other illegal miners.
He also called on the government to deploy the military to all these mining communities and sites to “keep peace” and fight against what he called the “ecological terrorists”.
“Deploy your military, our military is not only for peace keeping outside Ghana, this one Ghana needs peace keepers, we need peace keepers in Ghana.”
“Deploy our military, move them from their barracks and bases, put them in there, and lets have a national operation to clear our forest reserves, clear our water bodies, and then you can tell me you are committed to the fight.”
Illegal mining, he said, has become a big threat to the very existence of the population.
There has been continuous pressure on government to prosecute Chairman wontumi’s firm Akonta Mining Company for mining in the Nimri Tano forest reserve without license.
