A cargo truck registered in Burkina Faso overturned on the Circle overhead in Accra in the early hours of Thursday, crushing a commercial sprinter vehicle and bringing traffic to a standstill along one of the capital’s busiest interchanges.

The accident occurred around midnight as the truck, loaded with cereals including maize, beans and tiger nuts, made its way across the overhead.

In the process of overturning, the heavy vehicle landed on a sprinter, popularly known as a trotro, causing panic among commuters and drivers in the area.

Many early morning commuters reported delays as access to parts of the road was temporarily restricted to allow rescue and clean up operations.

Officials from the Ghana National Fire Service and the Ghana Police Service arrived at the scene shortly after the accident was reported.

Their teams focused on clearing the spilled cargo from the road and securing the area to prevent further accidents. Traffic officers also worked to redirect vehicles and gradually restore movement.

The cause of the accident is yet to be officially determined, and investigations are expected to establish whether mechanical failure or driver error played a role.
