President of the Republic of Ghana Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has assured the family of the late Professor Ama Ata Aidoo of giving their beloved a state-assisted burial.
The president made this promise when the family of the renowned author paid a courtesy call on him at the Jubilee House on Wednesday, June 14, 2023, to announce the burial date of Prof. Ama Ata Aidoo.
According to the family, Prof. Ama Aidoo’s funeral arrangements are scheduled from Thursday, July 13, to Sunday, July 16, 2023.
Addressing the family, President Akufo-Addo said, “I am happy that the arrangements you have made for her funeral will allow me to attend the laying-in-state”.
“Even before you came here, I had made the decision that she should be given a state-assisted burial. She deserves it, and it will give myself and the people of Ghana the opportunity to pay our last respects”, he added.
Prof. Ama Aidoo, born Christina Ama Aidoo, died on Wednesday, May 31, 2023, after a short illness.
Over the seven decades of her career, Ama Ata Aidoo published award-winning novels, plays, short stories, children’s books, and poetry and influenced generations of African women writers.
The late Prof. Ama Ata Aidoo is known for books such as Changes: A Love Story, Our Sister Killjoy, No Sweetness Here, Dilemma of a Ghost and Anowa, Diplomatic Pounds, After The Ceremonies, The Girl Who Can, and Someone Talking To Some time.
