Disqualified NPP delegates clash at Korle Bu polling centre

Tension flared at the Korle Bu Police Station polling centre in the Ablekuma South Constituency on Saturday after two disqualified delegates confronted the constituency chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and turned their anger on a journalist covering the primaries.

The delegates, whose identities were not disclosed, had earlier lost their voting rights after being removed from party positions.

Their disqualification made them ineligible to take part in the internal polls, a decision that reportedly triggered their presence at the centre.

Witnesses say the two individuals engaged in a heated confrontation with the constituency chairman, Collins Asante, accusing him of unfair treatment and bias.

The exchange quickly drew attention from party supporters and security personnel stationed at the centre.

The chairman is known to be aligned with the camp of Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, while the aggrieved delegates are believed to support former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

The situation worsened when a journalist, who was reporting on the voting process, became a target during the confrontation.

One of the delegates allegedly attempted to stop her from filming while hurling verbal abuse in her direction.

The incident nearly turned violent when another delegate reportedly tried to throw stones at the journalist.

Police officers on duty acted swiftly to calm the situation and prevent further escalation. Their intervention helped restore order at the centre within minutes.

No arrests were made following the incident, and voting resumed after calm was restored. Party officials later assured voters that the disruption would not affect the outcome of the process at the polling station.
