Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has warned the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of the future repercussions of the continuous detention of NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
Speaking after a visit with former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) office on Friday, Afenyo-Markin said they were not allowed to meet Wontumi as initially promised.
“Well, all those arrangements were made, and upon getting here, they came to tell us a different story. We will keep to it, and I find it very worrying that a country like Ghana, someone would demand GHC50 million before they grant enquiry bail. I am telling my friends in NDC to tick some of these things because posterity is watching,” he said.
The visit came as efforts continued to satisfy the bail conditions granted to Wontumi, who has been in EOCO custody for four days.
He was arrested over allegations of fraud and money laundering and later granted bail of GH₵50 million, with two sureties required, both to be justified.
After the closed-door meeting at the NIB office, Mr. Afenyo-Markin told reporters that despite progress, Wontumi would not be released just yet.
“We came to meet the second surety, but as it stands, Chairman Wontumi will remain in EOCO custody until all documentation and legal processes are completed,” he said.
The Minority Leader did not give further details about the surety or the next steps, but confirmed that discussions are ongoing to meet the bail conditions as soon as possible.
The visit by the two senior NPP figures has drawn significant attention, signalling the party’s active interest in securing the release of one of its most influential regional leaders.
