Police shoots armed robber, three others on the run
A 20-year-old suspected armed robber, Yakubu Musah, has been shot and wounded in a crossfire with police officers after a failed highway robbery in Gbongbonduri near Tuna in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District of the Savannah Region.
Three other accomplices who are suspected herdsmen are currently on the run and are being pursued by the regional police command.
ASP Degraft Armah Adjei of the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba Divisional Command in an interview on JoyNews, monitored by theghanareport.com, said the four had attempted robbing passengers in a cargo truck travelling on the Tuna to Sawla road on Saturday, April 23.
The robbers had mounted a roadblock in an attempt to rob their victims. Unknowing to the robbers, Police Personnel were detailed to accompany the cargo truck.
On reaching the spot, at the outskirts of Gbongbonduri, the armed robbers opened fire on the cargo truck indiscriminately, compelling the police to repel the attack of the robbers. Sensing the firepower of the policy and with death looming at them, the robbers took to their heels.
However, during the fire exchanges, the Police shot and wounded Yakubu in the thigh with the other three running for their lives. Yakubu, a resident of Tuna, according to ASP Adjei noted, is currently on admission at the Sawla Hospital under police guard and would help the Police in their investigations. His single-barreled gun was also retrieved by the Police.
ASP Adjei said the area has recorded several attacks on both private and commercial vehicles by armed herdsmen, especially in the evening. He said it was for this reason the Police in the area now escorts these vehicles to give the passengers protection and ensure safe passage of traders and their goods.
ASP Adjei assured motorists of their safety, saying they are ready to weed out criminals from the area.
