Police detain man seen assaulting wife in viral video

The Ghana Police Service has taken into custody a man seen in a viral Facebook video assaulting a woman believed to be his wife at their home in Ofankor in the Ga East Municipality.

The disturbing video sparked public concern as it showed the woman desperately trying to protect herself while neighbours looked on in shock.

According to a police statement, the suspect, John Odartey Lamptey, was arrested on Monday, November 17, 2025, at the family residence.

Officers say the arrest was carried out calmly but with urgency due to the nature of the incident and the widespread reaction the video generated.

Police added that two of Lamptey’s siblings, Grace Kushie Lamptey and Louis Odartey Lamptey, were also taken in after they allegedly attempted to confront a female tenant they believed had recorded and shared the video.

The tenant was safely removed from the scene and placed under protection to prevent further harm.

The woman who was assaulted had already fled by the time officers arrived. A police spokesperson noted that locating her remains is a priority as her safety is a major concern.

The Ghana Police Service has reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding victims of domestic abuse and holding offenders accountable.
