Parliament has resumed sittings for the second session of the 9th Parliament, facing a heavy workload with more than 600 bills and parliamentary questions carried over from 2025.
The scale of the backlog was disclosed by the leadership of the House during a media briefing held ahead of the resumption on Monday, February 3, 2026.
According to parliamentary leaders, the volume of unfinished business means members will have to work through an intense legislative schedule in the coming weeks.
Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga acknowledged the challenge, describing the session as one that will demand focus and commitment from both sides of the House.
He noted that Parliament has a responsibility to clear pending legislation while also responding to new policy priorities from the government.
Mr Ayariga also announced that President John Dramani Mahama is expected to appear before the House to deliver his second State of the Nation Address during the session.
The address is anticipated to outline the government’s direction and set the tone for parliamentary business in the months ahead.
As part of the legislative agenda, the Majority Leader revealed plans to introduce a bill seeking to rename Kotoka International Airport as Accra International Airport.
He explained that the proposal forms part of broader policy decisions the government intends to pursue during the current sitting.
Meanwhile, Parliament is still awaiting a report into the disturbances that marred vetting proceedings in 2025. Leadership assured that members will be briefed once the report is completed.
“We are prepared for a demanding session, but Parliament must rise to the task and deliver for Ghanaians,” Mr Ayariga said.
The Minority caucus has also resumed participation in parliamentary business, setting the stage for what is expected to be a lively debate and scrutiny of government proposals as the session progresses.
