Preliminary assessments by local authorities and community leaders indicate that more than 1,000 houses were either partially or destroyed, displacing hundreds of families overnight.

Roofs were ripped off buildings, some structures collapsed under the force of the storm, and personal belongings were soaked or swept away by the heavy rains.

Many of the affected families have sought temporary shelter with relatives and friends, while others are staying in churches, schools, and other public buildings as they wait for relief and support.

“I was inside the room with my kids and everything collapsed. It started raining inside the room, and I took the kids and went and slept in my junior brother’s room. I will need help to rebuild my room,” one resident said.

Another resident named Muniru remarked that “when it happened, we couldn’t sleep in the room and we resorted to going and sleeping with friends. We were thinking about what we would do to rebuild the house. Everything got destroyed by the rainstorm. We were at work at the time it happened, and we came and met everything in water.”
