A 25-year-old excavator operator, Gausu Yusif, has been fatally shot, while his companion, Charles Essuman, is in critical condition following an attack by unidentified gunmen in the Awutu Kwame Whettey Forest located in the Awutu Senya West District of the Central Region.
The two men were reportedly tasked with clearing bushes and preparing access to the forest for the purpose of collecting rock samples for stone quarrying.
According to the Awutu Bereku District Police, the driver and his companion were operating the excavator to create a path into the forest when assailants on a motorbike opened fire on them.
Superintendent Edmond Nyamekye, the Awutu Bereku District Commander, confirmed the incident and stated that investigations are currently underway, with efforts being made to apprehend the offenders.
In the meantime, Nai Kojo Nam-Quaye, the Chief of Awutu Aberful, who had handed over the rock to the Chinese investors, has urged the Inspector General of Police to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure that justice is achieved.
