NPP selects Baba Ali for Ayawaso East by-election candidate

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has declared Baba Ali as its candidate for the parliamentary seat in the upcoming Ayawaso East by-election, paving the way for a competitive race.

Divine Agorhom, the Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the party, made the announcement, highlighting Baba Ali’s experience, humility, and ability to mobilise support as significant considerations.

The by-election is set for March 3, 2026, following the unexpected passing of the former Member of Parliament (MP), Naser Toure Mahama.

The NPP is preparing for a vigorous campaign to secure the seat.

Mr. Agorhom stated that the selection was made after thorough consultations and was based on the candidate’s experience, humility, and ability to rally support within a short timeframe.

He elaborated that the party intentionally chose a candidate who is well-versed in its internal dynamics and capable of collaborating effectively with party members at all levels to mobilise grassroots support.

“We want somebody with strong party experience who understands our structures, is well known within the party, and has the humility and willingness to go door-to-door and engage everyone so that, within this short period, we can work together to make him acceptable to the constituency,” he noted.

Meanwhile, the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) is preparing to conduct its primary on February 7, before the March 3 by-election, with five candidates having completed the vetting and balloting processes last Wednesday.
