The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Kodua Frimpong, has announced Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh (Napo) as the vice presidential candidate for the NPP ahead of the December 7 elections.

The secretary announced this at a press conference in Accra on July 4, 2024.

This announcement comes after Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, flagbearer of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), formally informed the party’s national officers about his selection of Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh as his running mate for the upcoming 2024 general elections.

This decision marks a pivotal moment in the party’s strategy for the elections.

The announcement was made after Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s nomination had been previously presented to the Majority Caucus in Parliament.

Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia had already informed President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo that Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh is his choice as running mate for the December 2024 elections.

This was during a meeting Dr Bawumia had with President Akufo-Addo at the Jubilee House on Tuesday night (June 25, 2024).

In his speech, Mr Koduah said, “If you were to ask me what Dr. Matthew Prempeh brings to the NPP presidential ticket, I would tell you he brings decades of political astuteness, trustworthy leadership, confidence, decisiveness, grassroots mobilization, charisma, patriotism, and demonstrable incorruptibility.

“Again, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh shares Dr. Bawumia’s vision of bold solutions for our country that are responsive to the needs, opportunities and challenges of the 21st century. In this respect, he complements our flagbearer in many significant ways, and the two enjoy a warm, personal relationship anchored on deep mutual respect”.

“More importantly, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh has a great working relationship with our Presidential Candidate, H.E Alhaji Dr. Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia. The synergy between these two great leaders on our presidential ticket, coupled with their proven track-record and transformational campaign message would help the New Patriotic Party to secure a resounding third consecutive electoral victory on the 7th of December 2024, by the grace of God,” he concluded.

The December presidential contest is mainly between Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia of the NPP and former President John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The stakes for the race are high as the NPP seeks to win a third term, while Mr Mahama and the NDC want to avoid a third consecutive defeat.

On December 7, Ghanaians will vote for a new president and 275 MPs.

This will be the country’s ninth consecutive election since returning to constitutional rule in 1992.
