Notorious robbery suspect shot dead during escape attempt

A suspected armed robber linked to a deadly highway attack has been shot dead after allegedly attempting to escape while assisting police with investigations.

The deceased, identified as Mahamadu Gariba Kirror, was said to be a key member of a robbery gang believed to be responsible for violent attacks along major roads, including the Yeji Atebubu highway.

According to police sources, Kirror was arrested and was leading officers to the hideouts of his accomplices when the incident occurred.

During the operation, Kirror reportedly attempted to flee from police custody. Officers opened fire in an effort to restrain him, but he sustained multiple gunshot wounds.

He was later pronounced dead from his injuries.

Police say Kirror and his gang were behind a robbery attack on January 29, 2026, along the Yeji Atebubu highway, during which a driver and a passenger were shot and killed.

The incident sent shockwaves through nearby communities and heightened concerns about safety on the stretch of road, which is frequently used by commuters and commercial drivers.

Investigations have revealed that several members of the gang remain at large. The suspects, identified as Umaru, Issifu, Furgur, Ibrahim, Shaibu, and Yelow, are currently on the run, and police have intensified efforts to track them down.

The Ghana Police Service has assured the public that it remains committed to tackling armed robbery and restoring confidence on major highways.
