The National Peace Council (NPC) has commended the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for responding to its appeal to return to the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC).
The NDC boycotted IPAC meetings since March 2020 after the party expressed displeasure about the posture of the Electoral Commission (EC).
The Party had accused the Commission of failing to take into consideration decisions at IPAC meetings as part of its electoral reforms.
However, following an intervention by the NPC, the NDC agreed to return to IPAC.
The decision was announced by the National Chairman of the NDC, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah at a stock-taking conference organized by the NPC at Peduase in the Eastern Region on Thursday, December 14, 2023.
Following this commitment, the NDC has participated in two recent IPAC meetings on the 22nd and 29th of January 2024.
In a press release, the NPC noted that it is hopeful that the NDC’s commitment will be sustained to further strengthen Ghana’s existing democratic credentials.
“We would like to express our appreciation to the Electoral Commission, Political Parties, all Political Actors and Stakeholders within the electoral management system for their support to the NPC in the bid to promote sustainable peace in Ghana.
“We urge all stakeholders in the political space to use dialogue and consensus-building to ensure a free, fair, credible, and peaceful 2024 elections.
“In addition, we urge the public to appreciate the fact that peacebuilding can sometimes be a slow process. Therefore, we must all exercise patience and support the NPC and its partners in building a sustainable, peaceful country,” the statement read.
