NAIMOS Taskforce arrests two illegal mining suspects at Subrisu

The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations (NAIMOS) Taskforce conducted a coordinated raid on December 8, 2025, targeting illegal mining sites at Subrisu in the Western Region.

This operation resulted in the apprehension of two individuals suspected of engaging in unlawful mining activities.

As stated by the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, the suspects were discovered actively operating two excavators along with other mining equipment near the Subri River at Bekwai Subrisu.

Their operations, along with those of other galamsey operators in the vicinity, have led to significant pollution of the river and considerable degradation of adjacent farmlands and forest reserves.

During the operation, the NAIMOS team dismantled multiple metallic gold-trapping platforms utilised by the illegal miners and destroyed three heavy-duty water pumping machines to impede further activities.

The taskforce characterised the raid as essential to cease the ongoing environmental damage and to protect crucial water bodies.

The two individuals arrested were reported to be Chinese nationals. They have since been transported to Accra and handed over to the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) for subsequent action.

NAIMOS emphasised that the operation at Subrisu is part of its continuous surprise nationwide crackdown on illegal mining, which aims to restore order and protect Ghana’s natural resources.

The taskforce reiterated its dedication to enhancing enforcement efforts to ensure a more responsible and sustainable mining sector.
