MTN threatens to terminate contract with Ghana FA
The Country’s leading telecommunication company have reportedly threatened to withdraw their Sponsorship packages for the Ghanaian FA competition.
MTN Ghana have threatened to pull out as the official headline sponsor of the Ghanaian FA if the 2019/20 season is truncated by the Ghana Football Association.
According to Takoradi based radio station Skyy Power FM, the telecommunication company has told the country’s football governing body to continue their season or lose their sponsorship for the FA Cup competition.
All football activities in the West African country has been suspended due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
The MTN FA Cup competition has not been effective since 2017 where the two most glamorous clubs in Ghana — Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko — squared off in the final which Kotoko emerged the winners after whipping their arch-rivals 3-1 in the final at the Tamale Sports Stadium.
It would be recalled that the Ghana Football Association on March 16, 2020 suspended all football competitions following the directives by the President of the Republic of Ghana Nana Akufo-Addo to place a ban on public gatherings and all sporting activities.
The Ghana Football Association has held discussions with the club owners and all stakeholders of the game since April on the way forward of football.
Earlier this month, the Ghana FA President Kurt Okraku met the Government Advisory Committee on COVID-19 to discuss the possible return of football despite the ban on some sporting activities including football had been suspended until July 31st.
MTN deal with the Ghana Football Association was announced in 2010 on the return of the FA Cup competition after nine-year hiatus.
