Mortuary workers declare strike over salary arrears

The Mortuary Workers Association of Ghana (MOWAG) has announced that it will withdraw all services nationwide beginning Thursday, September 26, 2024.

In a statement, MOWAG said the action is necessitated by the government’s neglect of their working conditions and delay in payment of members’ salaries dating back to 2020.

The statement added that despite numerous negotiations with the Ministry of Health and other stakeholders, the government had failed to address members’ demands for improved salaries, a better working environment, and adequate personal protective equipment (PPE).

The association said if the government failed to address these years-long issues by Thursday, it would close all mortuaries in Ghana.

This closure will leave the mortuaries overwhelmed with bodies which will in turn affect the operations of health facilities.

“If by the said date, our employer does not take positive steps to resolve our grievances, members are directed to close all mortuaries, stay at home until the needful is done.

“We however do not expect a letter from any quarters demanding we come for hearing. Hearing time is over. It is imply about implementation,” the statement said.

In November 2023, the mortuary workers called off an intended strike following a meeting with the National Labour Commission (NLC) over the same grievances mentioned above.

The call-off of the strike was a welcome relief for Ghanaians, who rely on mortuary workers to provide essential services.
