The Minority in Parliament has urged President John Dramani Mahama to immediately recall Ghana’s Ambassador to the United States, Victor Smith, over allegations of unprofessional conduct and a failure to adequately defend Ghana’s diplomatic interests.
The appeal was made by the Deputy Ranking Member of Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, Nana Asafo-Adjei Ayeh, who said the ambassador’s actions have further weakened Ghana’s standing at a time of growing diplomatic tension.
Mr Ayeh argued that instead of focusing on constructive engagement with key U.S. institutions, the ambassador has been sidetracked by what he described as avoidable political exchanges, leaving important national issues unattended.
He also accused the ambassador of breaching consular confidentiality and drawing Ghana’s mission in Washington into partisan domestic politics, actions he said fall below accepted diplomatic standards.
According to Mr Ayeh, these lapses reflect poor judgment and leadership, damage the reputation of Ghana’s foreign service, and undermine the country’s ability to effectively pursue its interests abroad.
“The timing of this conduct is particularly troubling,” he said, noting that Ghana’s diplomatic relations with the United States require careful handling and sustained engagement, not public posturing.
The Minority warned that Ghana cannot afford ambassadors who prioritise media statements over quiet, strategic diplomacy, especially when bilateral relations and the welfare of Ghanaians living abroad are at stake.
They stressed that restoring professionalism and focus within Ghana’s diplomatic missions is critical to safeguarding national interests and rebuilding confidence among international partners.
