The Chief of Defence Staff, William Agyapong, has called for a renewed culture of discipline within the Ghana Armed Forces, warning that stricter regimentation remains essential to improving performance and tackling modern security threats.

Lt Gen Agyapong delivered the message on Monday, March 23, as he opened the General Headquarters Retreat 2026 in Accra. He told senior officers that the military must return to its core values of discipline, professionalism and respect for command structures if it wants to remain effective.

He stressed that soldiers must follow established standards and uphold the chain of command at all times. According to him, these principles form the foundation of a strong and reliable fighting force.

The Defence Chief pointed to a rapidly changing security landscape, both globally and within the region. He identified asymmetric conflict tactics, radical militant activity, digital security risks, the spread of false information, and cross-border criminal networks as growing dangers that demand urgent attention.

He warned that these complex threats require more than just resources. He said the military must stay alert, disciplined and forward-thinking to respond effectively. He added that the Armed Forces must adapt quickly while holding firmly to its core values.

The retreat, which runs from March 23 to 26, is taking place in phases at Burma Camp and Mampong-Akuapem. Organisers say the programme will refocus the military on discipline, unity and resilience.

He further encouraged deeper partnerships between the military and other state institutions. He explained that a unified national approach would strengthen Ghana’s overall security system.

At the same time, he challenged officers to embrace innovation and modern technology. He said the Armed Forces must evolve continuously if it wants to stay ahead of future threats.
