May Day: Akufo-Addo calls on labour to “step forward” to defeat COVID-19
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has challenged Ghana’s working force to join forces with the government to combat the deadly coronavirus.
The virulent infection has adversely impacted the economy, with tourism, exports, imports, revenue, employment and taxes, among others, taking a huge hit.
On the occasion of the celebration of May Day, Mr Akufo-Addo implored the labour front to bear with the challenges and complement the government’s efforts to fight the disease.
Mr Akufo-Addo acknowledged the significant efforts of the labour unions in the freedom fight for Ghana against British colonial power. He added that their role “is written in gold.”
“Today, our nation requires its active involvement in this fight against the pandemic, and I call upon all working people to step forward again. I am confident that, together, if we remain united and resolute, and maintain discipline and self-discipline, we shall defeat this virus,” he said at the virtual celebration broadcast online.
