The people of Kutre No. 2 in the Berekum Municipality of the Bono Region are shocked after a resident killed his ex-wife and hanged himself in a nearby bush.
Kwame Amakona shot and killed his ex-wife Mary Kyeraa on the dawn of Friday, 23 September 2022, and was later found hanging dead on a tree on the same day.
The couple who shared two children had gone their separate ways due to reasons yet to be known.
The separation had led Mary to move out of Kotaa, where they lived together and settled at Kutre No. 2 with the children.
Information gathered by The Ghana Report indicates that Kwame, who wanted his family back, had gone to plead with Mary for reconciliation, but she refused to accept the offer.
Esther Suimia, a friend of Mary, told the media that on the fateful day, the man laid ambush for his ex-wife, who was returning from the Berekum Holy Family Hospital, where one of their daughters was receiving treatment.
He attacked Mary, shot and killed her without hesitation.
He was later discovered hanging dead on a tree in a bush near the crime scene.
Traumatised residents have described the deceased ex-husband’s actions as shocking since he was known to be a calm person in the community.
The body of the victim has since been deposited at the mortuary pending further investigations.
Meanwhile, the Chief of Kotaa, where the former couple lived, Osabarima Kwaku Brenty II, has described the suspect’s actions as an abomination and said efforts were underway to perform traditional rites to purify the community in order to prevent a bad omen from befalling the town.
The police, however, are yet to comment on the incident.
