Koforidua court adjourns student gang rape case to February 18

The Koforidua District Court B has adjourned the alleged gang rape case involving two students arrested in connection with an incident that occurred during an inter-school sports event in the Eastern Regional capital.

The two suspects, both underage, appeared before the court and were remanded into the custody of their parents. They are expected to reappear on February 18 as police continue investigations into the case.

The students were arrested for their alleged involvement in the gang rape of a female senior high school student near the Koforidua Sports Stadium during an inter-school competition.

They have been charged with conspiracy to commit a crime, to wit, rape and rape, while one of them is also facing an additional charge of robbery.

The case has sparked widespread concern among parents, teachers and students, many of whom say the incident has cast a shadow over what is usually a time of excitement and school pride.

Providing background to the case, the Eastern Regional Police Command confirmed that the arrests were made on February 7 following a report of a sexual assault near the stadium.

Police say they are actively searching for a third accomplice, believed to be an old student, who is currently on the run.

Meanwhile, the victim is receiving medical care at the Eastern Regional Central Hospital and is reported to be in stable condition.

The incident occurred at a time when senior high schools in Koforidua were participating in inter-school competitions across several venues, including the sports stadium, Koforidua Senior High Technical School and Pope John Seminary.
