The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has announced an extension of the eviction deadline for businesses situated around the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.
The businesses affected, predominantly container shops, makeshift garages, food joints, and provision stores, were previously instructed to vacate the premises by February 5, 2026, or risk forced eviction.
However, after discussions during a meeting of the Ashanti Regional Security Council (REGSEC), the deadline has now been postponed to Monday, April 6, 2026.
This extension follows the intervention of the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amakomhene, and the Dadiesoabahene, who advocated on behalf of the traders, requesting additional time for them to find alternative locations for their businesses.
The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly has encouraged the affected traders to fully utilise the extension and relocate voluntarily, emphasising that no further extensions will be provided.
In a statement to Citi News, the Public Relations Officer for KMA, Henrietta Afia Konadu Aboagye, cautioned that traders who do not vacate the area by the new deadline will face forceful eviction.
“We are not retreating on our stand that the unauthorised structures should not be there. They should move from there,” she stressed in an interview monitored by The Ghana Report on Citi News.
The Baba Yara Sports Stadium is presently encircled by a multitude of informal businesses, including garages, food vendors, and provision shops.
Many of these businesses operate from temporary structures such as wooden kiosks, metallic containers, and makeshift sheds.
According to the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, the eviction initiative is part of efforts to enhance public safety, improve sanitation, ensure unobstructed movement, and restore order and aesthetic value to essential public spaces within the metropolis.
