A civil society organisation, Election Watch Ghana, has petitioned the Inspector General of Police to investigate Dr Kingsley Nyarko, the Kwadaso MP over an alleged bribe.

It will be recalled that the Kwadaso MP was captured on camera handing over an envelope suspected to contain cash to some Electoral Commission (EC) officials during the just-ended Ejisu by-election.

The alleged exchange occurred at the Fumesua Pentecost Church polling station. He was seen dropping a white envelope on the table manned by the two EC officials.

Condemning the legislator’s conduct, the group stressed the need to prosecute him to restore public confidence in Ghana’s democratic institutions.

“We strongly condemn this brazen act of corruption, which undermines the integrity of our already dying democracy. We request that your office take immediate action to investigate and prosecute the MP for Kwadaso, Kingsley Nyarko for his involvement in this electoral malpractice.

“We believe that swift action is necessary to maintain public trust in our democratic institutions and to uphold the rule of law. We will be monitoring this case closely and expect a prompt response regarding the actions your office will take to address this matter,” the statement said.

Following the alleged bribery incident, the Electoral Commission has withdrawn the two temporary staff involved in the bribery scandal as it commences investigations into the incident.

The commission warned that it would not countenance acts that cast a slur on the integrity of the institution and would not hesitate to sanction officials who violate its laws.

It clarified that the envelope given to its officials was intended for lunch expenses, not as a bribe.

Dr Kingsley Nyarko, on the other hand, has also denied any wrongdoing, maintaining that he did not offer a bribe to the officials.

The Election Watch Ghana is not the only organisation calling for the head of the Kwadaso MP.

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) intends to invoke the authority of the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) and the Privileges Committee of Parliament over the matter.

Hopeson Adorye, a member of the Movement for Change, has urged the Ghana Police Service to arrest the Kwadaso MP over the bribery scandal.
